Recording the truth

Recording the truth     by: Kaveh Golestan

26 March, 2:30 pm

This internationally respected work of Iranian  documentary filmmaker and photographer, Kaveh Golestan, was cut short by his tragic death early in 2003 when he stepped on a landmine while covering the conflict in Iraq for BBC Tehran. This documentary focuses on censorship in Iran in the time of President Rafsanjani and contains interviews with many well-known Iranian Journalists. As a result of making it, Kaveh spent two years under house arrest. The situation today is even worse than in 1991. After the screening Kaveh's son, Mehrak Golestan, will talk about his father and answer questions.

Moolade

AmnestyMooladé

15 March 2006
6.30 pm

A village in the countryside of Senegal. Colle Gallo Ardo Sy (Fatoumata Coulibaly) gives protection (Moolade) to four young girls who have fled from the village to escape from excision. Colle was circumcised herself and knows the horror only too well. Her defiant gesture ignites a revolution in the village, where struggle between tradition and freedom gains momentum and reaches a cathartic resolution. In this warm hearted and wryly observed take on village life, veteran Senegalese director Ousmane Sembene makes a plea to the 38 countries in the African Union that still practise female circumcision.

Favela Rising

21 February 2006

 Favela Rising

Winner of the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival’s New Documentary Filmmakers Award,
The film documents a man and a movement, a city divided and a favela (Brazilian squatter settlement) united. Haunted by the murders of his family and many of his friends, Anderson Sá is a former drug-trafficker who turns social revolutionary in Rio de Janeiro’s most feared slum.
Through hip-hop music, the rhythms of the street, and Afro-Brazilian dance he rallies his community to counteract the violent oppression enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by corrupt police.
