Self-portrait by Emily Bellhouse

This piece has been created from hundreds of small hand crafted glass tiles, each with an image of my family (going back three generations) embedded within it.
When viewed close-up you can see the miniature individual photographs but as you stand further away, an overall picture of me suddenly materializes. This piece memorializes past generations and pays tribute to their role in forming me as I am today.

I have always been fascinated by my families’ vast collection of old sepia photographs. As a child I would take these pictures out of their boxes and wonder who the characters were, what they were like and how they lived. To me they were a catalogue of lost narratives, destined to fade with time.

My ‘pixelated Imagery’ pieces permanently capture generations of visual memories by embedding them within glass.

Personal statement:
I am a graduate from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design and have a studio in South East
London (Deptford).
Glass has always had strong childhood associations for me. My first memory of the material is as a child, where I spent long and happy summer days combing beaches in the south of England for fragments of glass bottles.

To me these were jewel-like treasures and keepsakes from an unknown and exotic source.
My work aims to recreate these early feeling of surprise and wonder, by feeding the viewers imagination, inspiring their curiosity evoking, distant memories and creating new ones.

In addition to my pixeletad Imagery work, I create public art installations include a river exhibition at the Henly Festival of Music & the Arts (Henly-on-Thames, July 2004) with 30 Large sculpture ‘hovering’ in the water and collection of over 100 pieces placed on East Susssex beaches at low tide, as part of coastal currents Art Festival 2003.
